The Special Olympics Flame of Hope Has Arrived!

May 19, 2015 By D Marie Leave a Comment

The "Dignity Revolution" is alive in the Special Olympics Flame of Hope and as of this afternoon, it flickers on US soil. Athens, Greece June 2011 My family witnessed the Flame of Hope light the Special Olympics cauldron in Athens, Greece at the last Special Olympics World Games in 2011.  Though we are ecstatic to be once again present when the flame arrives in Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum this July, I have the honor of transporting it there!!!  On the afternoon of June 3rd, I will run through my hometown of Flushing, New … [Read more...]

Some Kind of Magic | Autism and the Disney Parks

April 30, 2015 By D Marie 3 Comments

Granted, my passion for Disney began long before I had a child with autism, but the stories of the magical connections between autistic individuals and all things Disney have turned that passion into a downright love affair.  While I witnessed my own son's transformation at the Disney Parks, I was unprepared for the volume of oh so familiar stories from the larger autistic community.  I hear them from the families I work with at a local school for autistic preschoolers.  I constantly read them on-line.  Who hasn't read Ron … [Read more...]

Meet One Person with Autism

April 2, 2015 By D Marie 15 Comments

"The world is coming."  For the first time in 16 years, the Special Olympics World Summer Games will return to the United States this July and August.  The city of Los Angeles will play host to over 7,000 Special Olympics athletes and 30,000 volunteers and I will be one of them!  After a life-changing experience at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Greece, my family is eager to once again volunteer in California this year.  Making that same journey from Athens to Los Angeles will be the Olympic torch; this … [Read more...]

Rose Parade to Highlight the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015

December 30, 2014 By D Marie 15 Comments

Photo credit: Kimberly of Magical Memories with the Mouse Are you ready for some football?!  Some inspiration as we charge into 2015?  The Pasadena Tournament of Roses has been a New Year's Day tradition for 126 years; an enduring pageant and kick-off to the yearly Rose Bowl Game.  The theme of this year's Rose Parade is "Inspiring Stories," which most naturally lends itself to recognition of the 7,000 athletes who will participate in the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015.  I applaud Kaiser Permanente … [Read more...]
