Disneyland’s Mad T Party

July 30, 2013 By D Marie 40 Comments

We're headed back to Disneyland!  And I will admit, with all the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend will have to offer, this is high on our list of "must get back to...". Loud music, funky outfits, colorful refreshments, arcade games; a typical teen paradise, yes? But embed this utopia in a Disney theme park, and you have created a literal wonderland for guests of any age.  (In fact, it sure did resemble the '70's to me!)  The Mad T Party, playing nightly in Disney California Adventure's Hollywood Land., is … [Read more...]

Top PT Tidbits to Help Your Sensory Child Love Walt Disney World

May 2, 2013 By D Marie 4 Comments

The Disney Parks; they can be a sensory Wonderland or Hades' Underworld for any child, but especially one that is affected with sensory processing difficulties.  Whether on the autistic spectrum, diagnosed with attention disorders, or simply a "sensitive" child, vacationing to any Disney Park can be a mixed blessing.  More and more anecdotal tales suggests that these children (or adults) can be greatly enriched by the experience.  However, without proper forethought, the pitfalls can be many and challenging.  Any Disney fan … [Read more...]

My Family’s April Awareness

April 23, 2013 By D Marie 2 Comments

It is National Autism Awareness Month, and it is time to take stock, re-assess, and for me, take a look back.  I began my blog, DIStherapy, almost exactly 2 years ago, and as a marker for what April will always mean for me and my family.  Oh my, awareness has come miles and miles since 1995!!! My boy was diagnosed before he was two; early, yes, but after years of working as a physical therapist, interning in a local children's hospital, I knew in my heart that autism had touched my family.  I recognized … [Read more...]

Healthy Family Dining at Downtown Disney~ Fulton’s Crab House

October 16, 2012 By D Marie 11 Comments

We've all heard the statistics: the prevalence of obesity amongst adults in the United States has risen dramatically in the past 5 years to nearly 34% of the population.  But at a recent orthopedics symposium I was staggered to find that not only has the obesity rate in 6-19 year olds tripled in that same time period, but there is a staggering increase in the amount of joint disease- once reserved for the aged- in these children!  So, in addition to skyrocketing rates of asthma, diabetes and heart disease, children are now at risk for … [Read more...]

Pearls From Epcot’s 30th Anniversary Celebrations

October 8, 2012 By D Marie 8 Comments

What an incredible 30 days this has been!  30 bloggers have shared the highlights of a park and a love- Epcot- across the span of 30 years.  In the blink of an eye, our retrospective is over.  As I wrote after last year's 40 Days to 40 Years:  The treasured gift that Walt left us is a shared joy when first experienced, and then gains sparkle as we remember the magic years later. As a way of thanking each and every author and supporter of 30 Days to 30 Years, it is an honor to share the highlights from exactly what we've … [Read more...]
