20 Days to 20 Years- 2005

March 25, 2012 By D Marie 4 Comments

Welcome back to our countdown to the 20th Anniversary of Disneyland Paris!  We’re Crystal & Bryan from The CanaDisney Blog.  Thanks to Donna, Beth and Manda for having us here on 20 Days to 20 Years!  This article will take you back to Disneyland Paris, circa 2005.

All incarnations of Disneyland/Magic Kingdom have a version of Space Mountain.  Most are similar to the original version at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.  However, the notable exception to this rule is located at Disneyland Paris.  Here, the attraction differs greatly from the version featured at the other Disney parks in both appearance and experience.

Disneyland Paris’ Space Mountain  originally opened at the park in 1995 and was themed around Jules Verne’s classic 1865 novel ‘From the Earth to the Moon’, hence the original version of the attraction’s name ‘De la Terre à la Lune’.  Unlike the other Space Mountains, this version had a much different outward appearance, featuring a huge cannon and a retro-futuristic theme.   It was the first roller coaster to feature synchronized on-board audio, and is the only version of Space Mountain to feature inversions and a section of the ride outside the mountain (the station and the cannon).

On January 11, 2005  ‘De la Terre à la Lune’ closed.  It was rethemed and reopened April 9, 2005 as ‘Space Mountain: Mission 2’.  Space Mountain: Mission 2’s storyline is not a redo, but rather a continuation of the original Jules Verne inspired storyline.  SM:M2 takes its passengers further into space on a new adventure beyond the moon to the edge of the universe.   The attraction’s track remained unchanged, but a brand new on-ride audio score was created.   The new version of the attraction’s trains are also now fired from the bottom of the cannon, whereas originally they were fired at the top.  The attraction building’s old Victorian theme was also updated with modern futuristic elements.

We’re fascinated by Disneyland Paris’ Space Mountain.  Paris’ version is a unique take on the WDW original, and we like how Disneyland Paris put a unique spin on what could have easily been a cookie-cutter version of the classic attraction.  It’s surprising that Disney hasn’t expanded upon the original Space Mountain template in any of their parks except for Paris.  Space Mountain: Mission 2 is definitely a unique experience, unmatched at any other Disney park.  We hope to get to Disneyland Paris at some point in our lives, and needless to say Space Mountain will be near the top of our to-do list!

Much thanks to the dynamic duo of Crystal & Bryan!  This team of Disney lovers from Ontario, Canada gives us their unique perspective via their blog, CanaDisney, and their wonderful Walt Disney World photo galleries. Follow them @CanaDisney, Facebook and Pinterest.

Tomorrow we will highlight a slightly different partnership on 20 Days to 20 Years; Growing Up Disney will share their Disneyland Paris trip planning pro, Janine @disneynine, with our readers.  Isn’t the Disney community generous?!
