These last 40 days have flown nearly as quickly as the past 40 years! Imagine- just one day left before the big 40th Anniversary Celebration at Walt Disney World. Today, Tricia from Return to Disney glances back to last year, and gives us her personal perspective of the year 2010.
2010 was one of those crazy, insane, wonderful years for our family. We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary, although to be honest I don’t remember what we did. Two of our sons were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders, after years of struggling to figure out what we were doing so wrong that our kids couldn’t handle preschool or kindergarten! My husband and I wrote our third book together, and of course, we took our first trip to Walt Disney World.
The theme that year was “What Will You Celebrate?” For us, we went on that trip to celebrate survival. We’d survived all the hectic, chaotic, life-changing stuff that had been thrown at us. But while we were there, we found ourselves celebrating a lot of small things too, things we didn’t expect.
Our oldest son, who has always been tentative and wary of new experiences, especially in front of a crowd, ran to join Jack Sparrow’s pirate crew! He had just finished reading the Jack Sparrow novels, and then to walk off the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and run into his hero was a moment of pure magic.
Our middle child, who sometimes gets lost in the chaos and struggle to meet his brother’s intense needs, and often lags behind as we rush from one place to another, got to remind us all to slow down and go Alex speed for a whole week.
Our third son, our most severely autistic child, made eye contact! He was so completely involved in the moment, and in sharing it with his family, that he looked us in the eye.
Our baby girl, who was two found a place where everyone knew her name: “Princess!”
And in all the busyness and fun, somehow my husband and I found moments to stop and just smile at each other.
In 2010, Disney asked us what we would celebrate. We celebrated each other.
